Eye Of The Tiger

21 Jun

My 20 Weekend Lovers

I’ve been MIA for most of June for 20 very very important reasons: my Liquid Assets team. June is race season, and I’ve been lucky enough to share most of the last few weekends with Liquid Assets.

An Absolute Blast

Every weekend, I trudge home completely exhausted, drained, and lacking sleep, but happy. This weekend at Centre Island was no exception.

The gorgeous weather accommodated good race conditions and the long breaks in between races allowed the team to relax a bit and enjoy the island, the festival, and each other’s company.

Of course, come race time, we were focused and kicked ass. From the front of the boat, I can see the that the team had a drive and hunger that I didn’t see at Milton and Pickering, and it impressed me to no end how much improvement they’ve been able to make within a few weeks.

Record Breaking

We broke our previous record for fastest race time by a long shot, and now Melvin has to stay true to his word and buy the whole team ice cream. πŸ˜€

I’m not even sure how we placed… I think 5th out of all the university teams, and 29th overall out of… 180 teams in the festival? Someone correct me if I’m wrong, I usually don’t keep track because I could care less how we placed.

When friends ask me about dragonboat, they always ask “Did you win?” which I used to find a strange question, but of course, it’s the most natural question to ask about a race.

Melvin builds the team culture such that we place a lot more value in the experience than the result. We’d take greater pride in having raced to the best of our abilities than in having beat the competition. It keeps animosity, ego, and other negative feelings at bay and instills in our team all the good traits that dragonboat can bring out of you. That’s the way the team was built three years ago, and I’m happy to see that it’s still like that now.

It’s one of the main reasons that I love the team so much.

The Wrap Up

This past weekend at Centre Island wrapped up the season for Liquid Assets and brought an end to the journey. I’m so proud of the team that words could only diminish how I feel.

So thank you, Liquid Assets, for having shared the race season with me, and giving me such amazing weekends. You’re incredible as a team and as individuals.

I would take you over a nice breeze any day of the week.

Much love, Liquid! ❀

T-1

18 Jun

It’s T-1 day to Centre Island, and Mother Nature has, once again, blessed me with her monthly gift, and it’s supposed to be thunder storming this weekend. Fantastic, I couldn’t have asked for a better combination. [I know, I’m such an annoying whiner when I’m on my cycle..]

My laryngitis has only made minimal improvements over the week, but my coughing as gotten a lot better. The Calmylin that my Facebook pharmacist recommended has worked pretty well (it also makes me pass out within an hour of taking it) to mitigate my cough attacks, but the antibiotics are doing absolute shit for me. Granted, I did miss two doses due to my own carelessness, so I have no one to blame but myself.

In light of all that, I am quite excited about the upcoming weekend. I’m going to see a magic show!! I’m seeing Masters of Magic, one of the Luminato events tonight. Knowing how easily impressed I am with magic, I’m sure I’ll enjoy it. πŸ˜€

Plus, of course, I have the dragonboat races at Centre Island this weekend. I encourage you to come watch us race on Sunday! The festival itself is tons of fun for spectators, and of course, my team and I would enjoy the support. πŸ™‚

Then, there’s also Father’s Day. I feel so bad. This year, I put in even less effort for Father’s Day than last year. Both years, it conflicted with the dragonboat races, so I never really had time to do anything with my dad, so I just end up buying him a present and making dinner for him. =\

It’s disappointing because I think my dad is secretly very sentimental about these things; sometimes I stumble across cards and presents that I’ve gotten him from previous years, and pictures of us tucked away in various crevices in his study room. Whereas my mom, on the other hand, uses the cards that I get her for scrap paper and I would find it in the recycling a week later… lol.

Either way, another promising weekend up ahead! Have a good one! πŸ™‚

I Go Down Easy

7 Jun

Okonomiyaki w/ Yunjie

Yunjie makes good okonomiyaki. And she made it for me Friday night. Too bad I got to see how easy it was to make, and am now substantially less impressed. But it’s all the same in here *pats tummy*. πŸ™‚

After dinner, we had to go emergency shoe-shopping (long story… lol) and bought matching shoes! Whoo! By that time, it was almost time for me to go to bed, so we couldn’t go to the Stroke It social that we were originally planning to. Sigh… Friday nights just aren’t the same when you have to go to bed at 11pm, lol. I’m such a square.

LA @Pickering

Sat morning: got up before the sun and met up with the team for Pickering. It was actually a stunning day, not the rainy cloudy day that was forecasted. The wind was crazy intense though, and it made the races (esp setting up) difficult.

Liquid Assets did so amazing at Pickering, I can’t even say anything that won’t come out understated or depreciative to how I feel. To get to Div A Finals for both the University Cup and OPG Cup, and to race against the caliber of legendary teams that we got to is a privilege, an honour, and much deserved by everyone on the team.

3 years, and we’ve made it this far. We couldn’t have done it without Derek‘s resilient dedication and leadership, nor Melvin‘s uncanny ability to coach, discipline and motivate the team. ❀

That’s all I’ll say now, since it’s not time to pat ourselves on the back yet. We still have Centre Island in 3 weeks, and if we can improve by this much over the course of 1 week – from Milton to Pickering – I’m expecting nothing short of epic at Centre Island, Liquid. Nothing short of epic. Eye of the tiger, guys, eye of the tiger… lol.

Anyway, post-race dinner was great because the whole team came out! All it took was a 20% off coupon to get everyone to come… lol. Cheap Asian much? Haha…

Dance It Out

After dinner, I rushed home, showered off that sticky lake water, changed, and cabbed it down to Frequency with Phil for Grace’s bday.

[Holy shit, I’m friggin tanned, lol. Gotta remember that sunscreen. xD]

Too much grindage, not enough jamming, not enough hip hop, and I’m not a huge fan of the grimier clubs… lol. [Funny thing is that I was telling my boss about it and turns out, he used to own Frequency back when it was called Metro. Then it was awkward cuz I had already told him that the club was shit, haha. ]

Buuuut drinks + music + dancing = good release from the rest of the day.

Plus, it’s about time I partied with Yunjie, and it’s been too long since I partied with Phil!!

Nothing else will be said. πŸ˜‰

Short Filmsss

Sunday, we all went for dim sum… dipped my deep fried squid into spicy sauce that was TFS (roflcopter).

Then Phil and I hit up When All Is Said and Sung for the Short Film Festival. We saw 7 short films, all of them musical shorts of mixed genres. Hits and misses. Some were excellent, and some were just wtf. If you’re interested, I would recommend these [to download or sth], in order:

1. A4 to A3 [quirky romantic comedy]

2. Surfing the Waste [living eco/enviro-friendly]

3. Phatwa [Iraqi is the new black]

4. Conversation Piece [a comedic marital argument to an improv jazz piece]

After the film festival, we ended the night at Congee Wong with good conversation and horrible horrible food. I don’t generally like eating at Chinese restaurants so I have pretty low expectations, but even considering that, I was still extremely displeased. I felt nauseated all night from that dinner, all the way up until I went to sleep. 😦

Funny thing is, I had leftovers from that dinner for lunch today and then felt like shit for the rest of the day. Yeah, I had that one coming.

Cheers, have a good week, everyone! =)

LA, DOTO & Porn

Food & Porn

After a long week at work, I went downtown to have dinner with Yunjie at Tokyo Grill, a shady looking restaurant on Yonge/Wellesley, literally steps away from where I used to live. I had my doubts, but was very surprised that it was good! It tasted like home-style cooking, although I’ve never had Japanese home-cooking, so I don’t know why I think that, hehe.

Since we missed CONTACT last weekend, Yunjie and I decided to go to the nearest CONTACT exhibit, which was Morpheus’s “Porn Candids: Between Shotsgallery… I swear this wasn’t my idea, lol. xD

I won’t say more, but if you want to check it out (not sure if it’s still there or not…) the gallery is at North Bound Leather (Yonge/Wellesley).

LA Luv @Milton

Woke up at 5:30am, which is a disgusting time for any living soul to be up.

Boarded the Mason train @WW and got to Milton by 7ish, rolling into the parking lot blasting gangsta rap, no less.

What can I say?

It’s sooooooooooooooooo good to see my Liquid Assets team again! And also the newbies! I was actually worried that I wouldn’t feel as comfortable, since I wasn’t really part of the team anymore, but those worries diminished quickly. πŸ˜€

Running up and down that rolling hill for warm-up exercises, waiting in anticipation for the first race of the season, and checking out super-cut topless dbt guys really brought me back… good times, good times, haha.

Honestly though, it was such a nice day. The race site is in the middle of a conservation park, so the scenery was just tops… I never even noticed how nice it was last year because I was so focused on the races, but this year, as drummer, I was able to take in the surroundings a teensy bit more.

I ran into random buddies of mine on other teams all throughout the day, and just to be surrounded by my own LA buds, shooting the shit for 10+ hours straight, is the bees knees. πŸ™‚

Our team did well (and Melvie’s team kicked ass too, from the one race that I saw of theirs), I’m super proud of us, but I know that we have waaay more in store for Pickering and Centre Island!

We ended the day at Ajisen for ramen… by this time, we were so tired, our conversations were barely coherent. But then again, those are the best types. πŸ™‚

Doors Open

On Sunday, me, Yunjie, Lan (Tommy & Olga) checked out the Doors Open Toronto Festival. I really enjoyed Doors Open this year. Last year, I got to see a lot of exhibits, but only skimmed each one. This year, I only saw 2 exhibits but thoroughly enjoyed both of them.Β  The first one was a tour of an architecture firm’s facilities, and the other one was a tour of a green roof (they both got me pretty interested in eco-friendly design, and I stumbled across this little YouTube doojigger that’s kind of related and pretty cool). Ask me about them in person, if you’re interested. πŸ™‚

After a day of walking through Toronto, I got my patio fix for lunch, and then lounged at Yonge/Dundas Square for a little while before coming uptown.

Stripped down for a shower last night, and realized that I was HELLA TANNED. My tan lines are way intense, and it’s not even June yet. Yeah, I’m going to be black by the end of summer. xD PLUS, I woke up with bruises on my chest from banging against the drum all day. 😦 So nasty, lol.

Regardless, I can’t wait for next weekend!! Pickering regatta and perhaps hitting up the CFC Short Film Festival! πŸ˜€

Have a good week, everyone! And LA, practice hard, eat smart, and get ready to get yelled at by me again next weekend! ❀

Cheers,

Garage Exploded!

5 Apr

So, I was on my way home Sunday, when I saw a fire truck speeding past. I arched my neck to see where it was turning, just in case it was my house that was on fire, and wouldn’t you know it, it did turn into my street! When I got nearer, I saw that half the neighbourhood had gathered around my house and there were 3 firetrucks and a police car surrounding the area. I was pretty freaked at this point.

Ok – but before I continue, I bet you’re wondering how my weekend was. πŸ˜›

Well, lemme tell you… it was excellent.

Beach Day

On Friday, Phil picked me up for lunch and to go to Ashbridges Bay for some beach volleyball. It was the most gorgeous day, and cruising down the highway in the drop top with my crazy blown hair forming a tornado around my head was just the bee’s knees, haha. By the time we arrived at the beach, the sun was barely peeking through the clouds, but it was still pretty warm. We skipped across the beach, then played a few games of volleyball before getting hungry again, so I suggested we go to Guu Izakaya again.

Coincidentally, we met Lucy + Chung & co. there, and they helped pass the time as we waited an hour to get a table (not bad!). The food was just as good as the last time, although I have to say, the novelty of the staff’s yelling kind of died off a bit for me. πŸ˜›

Then Phil and I went all the way back to Markham to figure out what to do, just to end up being at a Timmies for a couple of hours, chatting it up. That’s like my thing now, lol.

LA Love

Saturday, I went downtown to catch up with Helen over coffee. We were at Urbana and craving cold drinks, but Urbana ran out of ice, so Helen rushed off to a nearby convenience store to buy them ice cuz she wanted the drink so bad, LOL. Actually, she got denied by the convenience store and then the cashier at Urbana had to go get it himself, lolz.

After, Helen and I crashed a Liquid Assets pool practice. We went out for dinner + fro-yo with some of the team after practice. I was pretty high by that time, and I wandered over to Coolin’s place to chill for a while. I was craving another cold drink, so we went to the nearby Timmies and they ALSO didn’t have any ice coffees or any cold drinks. Arghhh… we ended up going to bbt on Yonge Street to chat instead. Stayed there til 2am, before getting kicked out and we retired for the night. Convo with Coolin never runs out.

Ring The Alarm

Was feeling super tired by Sunday morning. I realized I had a bunch of things to take care of by the end of the weekend, so I decided to head home right after breakfast.

Ok, so now we’re full circle to the beginning of this blog post. I was almost home when I realized that there must’ve been a really bad fire in my neighbourhood. My heart was pounding out of control as I sprinted over to my house from the bus stop, but the first person I saw emerge from the crowd was my mom, so I relaxed. She didn’t seem alarmed so I knew Dad was ok too. Turns out that it was my neighbour’s garage that had a gas leak! Clean-up crews are still working to clean up the mess. Crappy. :\
