Feathers, Floats, and Flesh!

10 Aug

I’ve been having a hectic couple of weeks. Last, last weekend, my auntie, cousin and grandma came to visit Vancouver/Toronto for a couple of weeks and stayed at our place for a week. It was really nice having a full house for once, and it reminded me of how much I’ve always wanted a big family.

Daddy and I took them around the city, and visited the CN Tower, Centre Island, Chinatown, UofT, Yonge/Dundas Square, and Eaton Centre. And lucky for them, it was Caribana weekend, so we went to the parade, which was SO MUCH FUN! πŸ˜€ Too bad there was the fence blocking everything off, but it was still a big party, pumped with loud music, dancing and energy.

I also got the chance to connect with my cousin a bit, which was only made possible because his English was pretty good. He told me about his super cute model girlfriend, the dance studio he has in his basement, the performances his popping team puts on, his aspirations to start his own business, and just told me about what life is like for a college student in China.

He’s studying business in university, so we related about how useless and inapplicable a lot of business courses are to the workplace, and then I astounded him with the concept of mixed gender dorms in Canadian universities LOL.

awk pic but the only one i could find hah

My aunt is super nice, and brought me lots of presents (mostly jewelry) and made us really really good spicy food. πŸ˜€

The grandma was hilarious, she’s so lively and cheerful and wore outfits with ducks and belly dancers on it, and she absolutely LOVED Caribana, which I found extremely surprising because I was originally worried that she would be offended by all the nudity, lol.

And of course, my cousin turned out to be super cool, and not mainland lame like I had anticipated (no offense) lol.

I was sad to see them go, but they invited me to visit them in Shen Zhen next year. I just might! πŸ˜€

Life’s A Beach :]

26 Jul

Summerlicious with Liquid Assets @Biff’s Bistro.

LA @Biff Bistro

The food was alright. The company, much better. The restaurant also provided entertainment in the form of a cougar with two less-than-appealing young chaps as her dinner companions, and a young Asian couple that literally did not say one word to each other the entire night, making for the most awkward 2-hour dinner I had ever witnessed, lol.

Anyhooo, after dinner, we stroll over to St Lawrence Mark & then parked ourselves at a bar for drinks, and incredibly appropriate topics of conversation were had. 😐

Then sexy time with Jacky after. LOL

Brunch with Helen @ Over Easy. Helen is still Helen. Everyone who knows Helen knows what that means, hahaha.

Then, I was supposed to do tennis with Jaron, but weather didn’t allow it, so we had a super chill, non-active day instead. Went condo shopping (it’s our thang), then watched Inception, and this time without me passing out 4 times in a drug-induced delirium.

Then we went to the Rex for dinner. Good jazz, decent food, horrible wine.

so cute! haha

Jaron decided to save the partying for next Friday, so I saw Descpicable Me with Yunjie. Cute, mindlessly entertaining movie… couldn’t have been more different from Inception, but it was exactly what I wanted.

Called it a night early because we committed to the 5K run the next morning. πŸ˜€

The Beaches Jazz Festival 5K Run, first thing in the morning! I have to say, there are few things better than the feeling of completing a run first thing in the morning. I originally semi-committed to the 10K, but because I fell ill, I scaled it back to the 5K instead. Tbh, I was scared to even do the 5K because I hadn’t run for 2 months, and I’d been eating nothing but chocolate for the past week, lolz. But it turned out to be super breezy! I almost wish I had done the 10K instead… now I can’t wait for my next 10K! And Yunjie’s gonna do it with me!!! πŸ˜€

After the run, we grabbed our freebies, then headed over to Bonjour Brioche for brunch with Phil. Bonjour Brioche was exactly what I expected it to be… the perfect little brunch place with good service and fuckin amazing coffee, brewed just to my liking, albeit the place was a little cramped and overcrowded. I got the smoked salmon, eggs & rosti potato, and it was excellenttttttttttttttt. I’d highly recommend it. πŸ™‚

After brunch, we headed back to Woodbine Beach and strolled through the Boardwalk, then checked out Kew Gardens for the Beaches Jazz Festival.

Then Phil and I did a bit of shopping along Queen St East: went to Binz (that place makes me so happy!!!) and then bookstore shopping, where I picked up a special book for a special boy. πŸ˜‰

Then we just chillaxed on a patio for pre-dinner and had a nice chat. πŸ˜€

Altogether, a nice, relaxing day outside.

daddy's bday last week

I got home in time for dinner with the fam, followed by a post-dinner stroll with my parents, where my dad regaled us with his tales of childhood as a strapping young lad in rural China, hahaha. Oh dad…

Can’t wait for long weekend coming up!!! πŸ˜€

I Go Down Easy

7 Jun

Okonomiyaki w/ Yunjie

Yunjie makes good okonomiyaki. And she made it for me Friday night. Too bad I got to see how easy it was to make, and am now substantially less impressed. But it’s all the same in here *pats tummy*. πŸ™‚

After dinner, we had to go emergency shoe-shopping (long story… lol) and bought matching shoes! Whoo! By that time, it was almost time for me to go to bed, so we couldn’t go to the Stroke It social that we were originally planning to. Sigh… Friday nights just aren’t the same when you have to go to bed at 11pm, lol. I’m such a square.

LA @Pickering

Sat morning: got up before the sun and met up with the team for Pickering. It was actually a stunning day, not the rainy cloudy day that was forecasted. The wind was crazy intense though, and it made the races (esp setting up) difficult.

Liquid Assets did so amazing at Pickering, I can’t even say anything that won’t come out understated or depreciative to how I feel. To get to Div A Finals for both the University Cup and OPG Cup, and to race against the caliber of legendary teams that we got to is a privilege, an honour, and much deserved by everyone on the team.

3 years, and we’ve made it this far. We couldn’t have done it without Derek‘s resilient dedication and leadership, nor Melvin‘s uncanny ability to coach, discipline and motivate the team. ❀

That’s all I’ll say now, since it’s not time to pat ourselves on the back yet. We still have Centre Island in 3 weeks, and if we can improve by this much over the course of 1 week – from Milton to Pickering – I’m expecting nothing short of epic at Centre Island, Liquid. Nothing short of epic. Eye of the tiger, guys, eye of the tiger… lol.

Anyway, post-race dinner was great because the whole team came out! All it took was a 20% off coupon to get everyone to come… lol. Cheap Asian much? Haha…

Dance It Out

After dinner, I rushed home, showered off that sticky lake water, changed, and cabbed it down to Frequency with Phil for Grace’s bday.

[Holy shit, I’m friggin tanned, lol. Gotta remember that sunscreen. xD]

Too much grindage, not enough jamming, not enough hip hop, and I’m not a huge fan of the grimier clubs… lol. [Funny thing is that I was telling my boss about it and turns out, he used to own Frequency back when it was called Metro. Then it was awkward cuz I had already told him that the club was shit, haha. ]

Buuuut drinks + music + dancing = good release from the rest of the day.

Plus, it’s about time I partied with Yunjie, and it’s been too long since I partied with Phil!!

Nothing else will be said. πŸ˜‰

Short Filmsss

Sunday, we all went for dim sum… dipped my deep fried squid into spicy sauce that was TFS (roflcopter).

Then Phil and I hit up When All Is Said and Sung for the Short Film Festival. We saw 7 short films, all of them musical shorts of mixed genres. Hits and misses. Some were excellent, and some were just wtf. If you’re interested, I would recommend these [to download or sth], in order:

1. A4 to A3 [quirky romantic comedy]

2. Surfing the Waste [living eco/enviro-friendly]

3. Phatwa [Iraqi is the new black]

4. Conversation Piece [a comedic marital argument to an improv jazz piece]

After the film festival, we ended the night at Congee Wong with good conversation and horrible horrible food. I don’t generally like eating at Chinese restaurants so I have pretty low expectations, but even considering that, I was still extremely displeased. I felt nauseated all night from that dinner, all the way up until I went to sleep. 😦

Funny thing is, I had leftovers from that dinner for lunch today and then felt like shit for the rest of the day. Yeah, I had that one coming.

Cheers, have a good week, everyone! =)

2 Jun

May was marvelous =)

Usually, I melt as soon as the temperature creeps near 30 degrees, but I actually quite enjoyed May’s incredibly intense heat… maybe because it brought me the first taste of summer of the year: the first patio drinks, the first comfortable nightly stroll through the city, the summer dresses, the mad shades, the uncomfortable sandals (boo :(), iced coffees, and gelato dates. πŸ™‚

Still waiting to pull out that swim suit!! πŸ˜‰

In May, I managed to accomplish my goals of…

1) Biking to work every day. Even through thunderstorms and 30+ degrees heat, and despite shitting my pants after almost getting hit by a truck on a highway ramp (if this happens again, I’m going to think it’s me, and not circumstance πŸ˜› ).

2) Making a financial plan. I want to put my spending in check, and make sure that I put aside an amount for my personal savings, a vacation fund for my parents, and I’m also going to start paying my parents “rent” for as long as I’m living at home.

3) Annnddd exploring new parts of town via Doors Open Toronto =)

There you go, an accomplished May. =D

June’s gonna be jumpin’!

For me, June’s always marked the beginning of summer. πŸ˜€

I’m expecting a lot more patios, Liquid Assets love, and Toronto festivals! Festivals I wanna hit in June are:

1) Short Film Festival – w/ philc

2) Waterfront Blues Festival – where my music lovers at??? =D

3) Luminato – where my arts & culture luvrs at?? lol

4) And of course, the Centre Island Dragonboat Race Festival!!! Come watch me and Liquid Assets kick ass!!!

Is Pride Week also in June? Not sure… but if it is, definitely that as well! πŸ˜€

Oh yes, my June goals!

1. Spend everyday outdoors.

Take advantage of this gorgeous weather, and move closer to my inevitable end of being blasian by the end of summer.

2. Less multi-tasking.

Multitasking will be the death of me. I’m usually working on at least 3 different projects at the same time at work, and it definitely makes me less productive overall, not to mention, contributes to my short attention span. I’m going to try to focus on only one project at a time at work, for the entire month… if nothing else, it’ll make me less stressed.

Already told my boss, he’s on board, haha.

3. 10,000 Steps Challenge

I said I was going to do it, and I’m going to do it. 10,000 steps each day. Bring it on, bitches. Time for some hardcore walking. Haha.

LA, DOTO & Porn

31 May

Food & Porn

After a long week at work, I went downtown to have dinner with Yunjie at Tokyo Grill, a shady looking restaurant on Yonge/Wellesley, literally steps away from where I used to live. I had my doubts, but was very surprised that it was good! It tasted like home-style cooking, although I’ve never had Japanese home-cooking, so I don’t know why I think that, hehe.

Since we missed CONTACT last weekend, Yunjie and I decided to go to the nearest CONTACT exhibit, which was Morpheus’s “Porn Candids: Between Shotsgallery… I swear this wasn’t my idea, lol. xD

I won’t say more, but if you want to check it out (not sure if it’s still there or not…) the gallery is at North Bound Leather (Yonge/Wellesley).

LA Luv @Milton

Woke up at 5:30am, which is a disgusting time for any living soul to be up.

Boarded the Mason train @WW and got to Milton by 7ish, rolling into the parking lot blasting gangsta rap, no less.

What can I say?

It’s sooooooooooooooooo good to see my Liquid Assets team again! And also the newbies! I was actually worried that I wouldn’t feel as comfortable, since I wasn’t really part of the team anymore, but those worries diminished quickly. πŸ˜€

Running up and down that rolling hill for warm-up exercises, waiting in anticipation for the first race of the season, and checking out super-cut topless dbt guys really brought me back… good times, good times, haha.

Honestly though, it was such a nice day. The race site is in the middle of a conservation park, so the scenery was just tops… I never even noticed how nice it was last year because I was so focused on the races, but this year, as drummer, I was able to take in the surroundings a teensy bit more.

I ran into random buddies of mine on other teams all throughout the day, and just to be surrounded by my own LA buds, shooting the shit for 10+ hours straight, is the bees knees. πŸ™‚

Our team did well (and Melvie’s team kicked ass too, from the one race that I saw of theirs), I’m super proud of us, but I know that we have waaay more in store for Pickering and Centre Island!

We ended the day at Ajisen for ramen… by this time, we were so tired, our conversations were barely coherent. But then again, those are the best types. πŸ™‚

Doors Open

On Sunday, me, Yunjie, Lan (Tommy & Olga) checked out the Doors Open Toronto Festival. I really enjoyed Doors Open this year. Last year, I got to see a lot of exhibits, but only skimmed each one. This year, I only saw 2 exhibits but thoroughly enjoyed both of them.Β  The first one was a tour of an architecture firm’s facilities, and the other one was a tour of a green roof (they both got me pretty interested in eco-friendly design, and I stumbled across this little YouTube doojigger that’s kind of related and pretty cool). Ask me about them in person, if you’re interested. πŸ™‚

After a day of walking through Toronto, I got my patio fix for lunch, and then lounged at Yonge/Dundas Square for a little while before coming uptown.

Stripped down for a shower last night, and realized that I was HELLA TANNED. My tan lines are way intense, and it’s not even June yet. Yeah, I’m going to be black by the end of summer. xD PLUS, I woke up with bruises on my chest from banging against the drum all day. 😦 So nasty, lol.

Regardless, I can’t wait for next weekend!! Pickering regatta and perhaps hitting up the CFC Short Film Festival! πŸ˜€

Have a good week, everyone! And LA, practice hard, eat smart, and get ready to get yelled at by me again next weekend! ❀
