Life’s A Beach :]

Summerlicious with Liquid Assets @Biff’s Bistro.

LA @Biff Bistro

The food was alright. The company, much better. The restaurant also provided entertainment in the form of a cougar with two less-than-appealing young chaps as her dinner companions, and a young Asian couple that literally did not say one word to each other the entire night, making for the most awkward 2-hour dinner I had ever witnessed, lol.

Anyhooo, after dinner, we stroll over to St Lawrence Mark & then parked ourselves at a bar for drinks, and incredibly appropriate topics of conversation were had. 😐

Then sexy time with Jacky after. LOL

Brunch with Helen @ Over Easy. Helen is still Helen. Everyone who knows Helen knows what that means, hahaha.

Then, I was supposed to do tennis with Jaron, but weather didn’t allow it, so we had a super chill, non-active day instead. Went condo shopping (it’s our thang), then watched Inception, and this time without me passing out 4 times in a drug-induced delirium.

Then we went to the Rex for dinner. Good jazz, decent food, horrible wine.

so cute! haha

Jaron decided to save the partying for next Friday, so I saw Descpicable Me with Yunjie. Cute, mindlessly entertaining movie… couldn’t have been more different from Inception, but it was exactly what I wanted.

Called it a night early because we committed to the 5K run the next morning. πŸ˜€

The Beaches Jazz Festival 5K Run, first thing in the morning! I have to say, there are few things better than the feeling of completing a run first thing in the morning. I originally semi-committed to the 10K, but because I fell ill, I scaled it back to the 5K instead. Tbh, I was scared to even do the 5K because I hadn’t run for 2 months, and I’d been eating nothing but chocolate for the past week, lolz. But it turned out to be super breezy! I almost wish I had done the 10K instead… now I can’t wait for my next 10K! And Yunjie’s gonna do it with me!!! πŸ˜€

After the run, we grabbed our freebies, then headed over to Bonjour Brioche for brunch with Phil. Bonjour Brioche was exactly what I expected it to be… the perfect little brunch place with good service and fuckin amazing coffee, brewed just to my liking, albeit the place was a little cramped and overcrowded. I got the smoked salmon, eggs & rosti potato, and it was excellenttttttttttttttt. I’d highly recommend it. πŸ™‚

After brunch, we headed back to Woodbine Beach and strolled through the Boardwalk, then checked out Kew Gardens for the Beaches Jazz Festival.

Then Phil and I did a bit of shopping along Queen St East: went to Binz (that place makes me so happy!!!) and then bookstore shopping, where I picked up a special book for a special boy. πŸ˜‰

Then we just chillaxed on a patio for pre-dinner and had a nice chat. πŸ˜€

Altogether, a nice, relaxing day outside.

daddy's bday last week

I got home in time for dinner with the fam, followed by a post-dinner stroll with my parents, where my dad regaled us with his tales of childhood as a strapping young lad in rural China, hahaha. Oh dad…

Can’t wait for long weekend coming up!!! πŸ˜€

A slammin’ good time

28 Jun

Holy shit, I’m finally home.

I feel like I haven’t been home in forever. I’ve been gone for the past 5 days, will be home for the next 2 days, then am gone again to NYC on Wednesday.

Something about being away from home tires me out, regardless of how inactive I am while I’m out or how much effort my hosts put in (and it’s a lot <3) to ensure that my stay-over is comfortable.

This week, I was at Niagara Falls with Liquid Assets. The trip was so much fun! We actually managed to pack a lot into the two days, and the pace was just right: not too rushed, but never a dull moment. Leave it to dragonboaters to know how to pace, hah.

We bussed down to Niagara Falls on one of those Asian casino buses, and they were so anal about not allowing us to carry on backpacks that some of us got kicked off. Eventually, we all regrouped at our hotel and had a “lunch picnic” in this lounge area in the hotel that was right outside our hotel rooms. Marianne and her amazing parents made enough food to feed the entire team… mad props!!! ❀

Afterward, Liquid Assets did Clifton Hills, which I thought would be a bore b/c I’d done it twice before, and once quite recently, but it was a dif experience with dif people, so still fun. Team dinner that night, followed by party in whoever’s room that was in the corner.

Activities for the next day were canceled because everyone was too tired. Good call.

We split up for outlet shopping and casino and then regrouped in the afternoon to bus back, but not before letting Melvie treat the team to ice cream, hehe. πŸ™‚

It was a good, relaxing mini-trip for the team, well-deserved after the season. πŸ™‚

It didn’t really hit me that it may have been our last official team hangout until the very end of the trip, when we split up to head back into the city… made me a little sad to see the team disperse. Hopefully, we’ll find ways to meet up throughout the summer, even if it’s in smaller groups. πŸ™‚

It was also shit to come back to Toronto to see the city torn apart by protesters and rioters. I’m not going to vocalize my disgust at what happened this weekend, I’m sure everyone’s seen and heard enough. But as a result, most of my weekend was spent staying in to chill downtown and avoiding the chaos outside.

All in all, a very relaxing weekend. The first in a long while. And for the first time in a while, I actually feel a little bit charged from the weekend activities.

Still, I’m worried that I’ll treat the next few days at work as a write-off… there’s so much stuff to catch up on over the next couple of days before leaving for NYC. I have a feeling I’ll be too distracted to concentrate during work. It’s been too long since I’ve had a solid, fully productive week at work. 😦

Vuvuzela! Teeheehee, that’s a funny word. πŸ™‚

Have a good week, chilluns. πŸ˜€

My 20 Weekend Lovers

I’ve been MIA for most of June for 20 very very important reasons: my Liquid Assets team. June is race season, and I’ve been lucky enough to share most of the last few weekends with Liquid Assets.

An Absolute Blast

Every weekend, I trudge home completely exhausted, drained, and lacking sleep, but happy. This weekend at Centre Island was no exception.

The gorgeous weather accommodated good race conditions and the long breaks in between races allowed the team to relax a bit and enjoy the island, the festival, and each other’s company.

Of course, come race time, we were focused and kicked ass. From the front of the boat, I can see the that the team had a drive and hunger that I didn’t see at Milton and Pickering, and it impressed me to no end how much improvement they’ve been able to make within a few weeks.

Record Breaking

We broke our previous record for fastest race time by a long shot, and now Melvin has to stay true to his word and buy the whole team ice cream. πŸ˜€

I’m not even sure how we placed… I think 5th out of all the university teams, and 29th overall out of… 180 teams in the festival? Someone correct me if I’m wrong, I usually don’t keep track because I could care less how we placed.

When friends ask me about dragonboat, they always ask “Did you win?” which I used to find a strange question, but of course, it’s the most natural question to ask about a race.

Melvin builds the team culture such that we place a lot more value in the experience than the result. We’d take greater pride in having raced to the best of our abilities than in having beat the competition. It keeps animosity, ego, and other negative feelings at bay and instills in our team all the good traits that dragonboat can bring out of you. That’s the way the team was built three years ago, and I’m happy to see that it’s still like that now.

It’s one of the main reasons that I love the team so much.

The Wrap Up

This past weekend at Centre Island wrapped up the season for Liquid Assets and brought an end to the journey. I’m so proud of the team that words could only diminish how I feel.

So thank you, Liquid Assets, for having shared the race season with me, and giving me such amazing weekends. You’re incredible as a team and as individuals.

I would take you over a nice breeze any day of the week.

Much love, Liquid! ❀

Garage Exploded!

5 Apr

So, I was on my way home Sunday, when I saw a fire truck speeding past. I arched my neck to see where it was turning, just in case it was my house that was on fire, and wouldn’t you know it, it did turn into my street! When I got nearer, I saw that half the neighbourhood had gathered around my house and there were 3 firetrucks and a police car surrounding the area. I was pretty freaked at this point.

Ok – but before I continue, I bet you’re wondering how my weekend was. πŸ˜›

Well, lemme tell you… it was excellent.

Beach Day

On Friday, Phil picked me up for lunch and to go to Ashbridges Bay for some beach volleyball. It was the most gorgeous day, and cruising down the highway in the drop top with my crazy blown hair forming a tornado around my head was just the bee’s knees, haha. By the time we arrived at the beach, the sun was barely peeking through the clouds, but it was still pretty warm. We skipped across the beach, then played a few games of volleyball before getting hungry again, so I suggested we go to Guu Izakaya again.

Coincidentally, we met Lucy + Chung & co. there, and they helped pass the time as we waited an hour to get a table (not bad!). The food was just as good as the last time, although I have to say, the novelty of the staff’s yelling kind of died off a bit for me. πŸ˜›

Then Phil and I went all the way back to Markham to figure out what to do, just to end up being at a Timmies for a couple of hours, chatting it up. That’s like my thing now, lol.

LA Love

Saturday, I went downtown to catch up with Helen over coffee. We were at Urbana and craving cold drinks, but Urbana ran out of ice, so Helen rushed off to a nearby convenience store to buy them ice cuz she wanted the drink so bad, LOL. Actually, she got denied by the convenience store and then the cashier at Urbana had to go get it himself, lolz.

After, Helen and I crashed a Liquid Assets pool practice. We went out for dinner + fro-yo with some of the team after practice. I was pretty high by that time, and I wandered over to Coolin’s place to chill for a while. I was craving another cold drink, so we went to the nearby Timmies and they ALSO didn’t have any ice coffees or any cold drinks. Arghhh… we ended up going to bbt on Yonge Street to chat instead. Stayed there til 2am, before getting kicked out and we retired for the night. Convo with Coolin never runs out.

Ring The Alarm

Was feeling super tired by Sunday morning. I realized I had a bunch of things to take care of by the end of the weekend, so I decided to head home right after breakfast.

Ok, so now we’re full circle to the beginning of this blog post. I was almost home when I realized that there must’ve been a really bad fire in my neighbourhood. My heart was pounding out of control as I sprinted over to my house from the bus stop, but the first person I saw emerge from the crowd was my mom, so I relaxed. She didn’t seem alarmed so I knew Dad was ok too. Turns out that it was my neighbour’s garage that had a gas leak! Clean-up crews are still working to clean up the mess. Crappy. :\
